ROOTSTOCKS

We use a variety of semi-dwarfing and fully dwarfing rootstocks.  We try to use rootstocks that have good disease resistance and cold hardiness for northern climates.  Below are the rootstocks we normally work with, if you are looking for a rootstock you do not see listed, please contact us and we may be able to source it for you.

Semi-dwarf rootstocks

B118 (Budagovski 118) – Extremely cold hardy, semi-vigorous, freestanding requiring no support.  Resistant to collar rot and apple scab.  Size: 85% of standard.

M111 (EMLA 111)Freestanding, vigorous and well adapted to both heavy and light soils and able to withstand drought conditions.  Resistant to collar rot and woolly apple aphid.  Size: 75% of standard.

M7 (EMLA 7)Well anchored and good winter hardiness.  Well adapted to many climates, but does best in deep fertile soils.  Not well suited for sandy soils.  Freestanding, but has tendency to lean if not support in early years.  Resistance to collar rot and fireblight.  Has tendency to sucker.  Size: 60% or standard.

G890 (Geneva 890) – Freestanding (support recommended in early years) precocious and productive.  A good replacement for G30 without the graft union brittleness.  Resistance to crown rot, fireblight and woolly apple aphid and also replant tolerant.  Size 50%-60% of standard.

Dwarfing Rootstocks

B9 (Budagovski 9) – Requires support.  Very precocious producing crops in 2-3 years and good winter hardiness.  Very resistant to collar rot and moderate resistance to mildew and scab.  Some resistance to fireblight has also be demonstrated.  Excellent choice for high density plantings.  Size: 25% – 30% of standard.

B10 (Budagovski 10) – Support required.  Good preciosity and cold hardiness.  Resistant to fireblight.  A good choice for weaker growing varieties, shows more vigor in the nursery than B.9.  Size: 30% – 35% of standard.

G11 (Geneva 11) – Requires support.  Good preciosity and vigor suitable for weaker growing varieties.  Moderate resistance to both fireblight and woolly apple aphid and replant tolerant.  Size: 25% – 30% of standard.
